The origins of Lerici date back to the Etruscan era and in the first half of the 12th century the town transformed itself from a small fishing village into a strategic seaport. During the Middle Ages it was often the subject of disputes between Genoa and Pisa, as it was located on their common border. It was during the occupation of the city by the Pisans that its castle was built in 1241 and subsequently enlarged and strengthened by the Genoese when the city finally came under their control in 1479.

Over time, Lerici changed its military vocation into an important port for travelers, pilgrims and merchants headed to Rome, northern Europe and Santiago de Compostela. This change meant that an increasing number of noble families settled in the area and enriched the landscape with austere and elegant villas, which can still be admired today. The city later developed into the charming tourist center it is today.

Visiting Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, it will be impossible to miss the Oratory of San Rocco.
Built in 1287 in honor of Saints Martino and Cristoforo, it was enlarged around 1523 and dedicated during the plague to San Rocco, patron saint of the plague victims.
Its tower was born as a watchtower but in the sixteenth century it was transformed into a bell tower.
The tower had a function very similar to that of the Laterna of Genoa and inside you can still see the coat of arms of Genoa that marked the port of the city.
